September 11, 2001 changed the course of American history forever. No American will ever live the same. On that day, for 102 minutes, the world looked on in horror as terrorists flew hijacked passenger planes into New York City's twin towers. These iconic buildings were destroyed while Although this tragic event happened when you were very young, your parents and family members surely have vivid memories of that day. What do they remember? Where were they when they found out about the attack? This project will help you remember and reflect on 9/11 and learn the facts about what actually happened.
Task
Acting as reporters on a newscast, you will research the facts of September 11, 2001. You will need to read articles, look at pictures, watch videos, and talk to people who remember that day to learn about what actually happened. You will present your information as a news team reporting on an important event. Once all the information is gathered, you will create a news story as if the events just happened that day. It is important as Americans that we all understand how the events of that day changed our lives forever.
Permission- Due to the sensitive nature of the materials you will be researching, a permission slip is required to participate in this project. Students who do not receive their parents'/guardians' permission will be assigned an alternate project.
Process-
Step 1- Talk to your family. Write a one page paper on what you/they remember and what you understand about what happened that day. I know you were young and that it happened almost your lifetime ago, but you will be surprised the firsthand (primary source) information you will be able to gather.
Step 2- Working with your group, visit the interactive website “102 Minutes that Changed America” to learn more about the places around New York City and how the news of this tragedy spread. This website will allow you to travel to special places in New York that demonstrate the immediate impact of that day. Watch the short videos, take notes so you can remember important information. Remember you are a reporter. Details matter.
Step 3- Review the timeline to give you a better idea of exact times that each thing happened. Click on the pictures to get a detailed description of the image. Take notes, details matter.
Step 4- Remember to seek out information from people who were actually there on that day or firsthand accounts of that day. Your research will provide such sources where you will find personal interviews and direct quotes from people involved or that saw the event happen. Check out face to face stories to read eye witness accounts. You must include a minimum of two quotes or personal stories in your new story.
Step 5- Your news crew (group) must decide who will have which job. You will need to write a script, make cue cards, decide on a broadcaster or broadcasters. You will also video your news story. Share responsibilities or choose one person for each job. It’s up to you.
Step 6- Video the news story. Make sure you look professional if you're on camera. Present the events as if they just happened today. Use the information found in your research to present the facts to viewers.
Step 7- Go back to step one and read the paper you wrote. Write a second one, one page long, on what you have learned through this project and how your opinion may have changed through your research. Take a look at this website about website about the aftermath of 9/11.
Step 8- Create a wordle of words that come to mind of 9/11.
Step 9- Present your news report to the class
Congratulations, your project is complete!
